The London Combination was founded in 1915, with Chelsea one of 12 founding members. It originally featured first team squads but changed to be for reserve teams from 1919 onwards. It continued to be specifically for London clubs until 1926, at which point it changed to become the Football Combination when ten clubs from outside of London joined it. It endured numerous changes over the years, with more clubs joining it and others resigning at one point or another. It was finally drawn to a close in 2012, which was the final time that it was played.
In terms of their success in the competition, Chelsea won it in its debut year. It obviously helped that it was only open to London clubs at the time, with the other sides that played in it being Arsenal, Brentford, Clapton Orient, Croydon Common, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and West Ham United. Chelsea won it 13 times over the years, with the club’s last success in the trophy coming at the end of the 1993-1994 campaign.
