Many players have represented Chelsea over the years, but only a select group have had the honour of being named club captain. Details on the players that have captained the Blues before competitive football was suspended during the Second World War are incomplete but post-war captains are well documented.
Cheslea’s first captain after WWII was Scottish defender “Gentleman John” Harris who signed permanently from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £5,000 in September of 1945. Harris actually represented Chelsea during the war, and captained the side to victory in the famous Southern Final of the Football League War Cup in April ’45 against Millwall at Wembley Stadium in front of 90,000 fans. Chelsea lost the final against Northern Final winners Bolton Wanderers in a match played at Stamford Bridge.
Harris remained at the club until 1956 but passed the captain’s armband to Roy Bentley in 1951. Bentley signed from Newcastle for £11,000 in January of 1948, and was the club’s top goalscorer in each of his eight full seasons at the Bridge between 1948/49 and 1955/56, making him Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with 150 goals. To further cement his place as a Chelsea legend, under manager Ted Drake Bentley became the first Chelsea captain to lift the league championship trophy in 1955/56.
In the years since, some Chelsea greats have been named as Chelsea captain, including Terry Venables, Ron Harris and Dennis Wise. When Roman Abramovich made his first managerial appointment in June 2004 by hiring José Mourinho, the Portuguese coach turned to 23-year-old English defender John Terry to take on the responsibility of club captain. Terry would go on to be Chelsea’s most successful ever player winning 15 major trophies. In a total of 19 years with Chelsea, John Terry would make 717 senior appearances and was captain for over 500 of those.
