Chelsea Second Division Titles & Finishes By Season

Second Division Against Stamford Bridge Seating

After gaining promotion to the First Division in 1907, Chelsea faced relegation in the 1911-1912 season, which led to their first stint in the Second Division. However, they managed to secure promotion back to the top flight in 1912-1913. The next significant period in the Second Division came in the late 1970s when Chelsea experienced a decline in form. After finishing 18th in the First Division at the end of the 1977-1978 season, they were relegated to the Second Division for the 1978-1979 campaign. This was a challenging time for the club, as they struggled to regain their place in the top flight.

Chelsea spent five seasons in the Second Division, with varying degrees of success. Under the management of John Neal, Chelsea had a strong showing in the 1983-1984 season, narrowly missing out on promotion back to the First Division. However, the following season proved to be a turning point as they clinched the Second Division title, securing promotion back to the top flight in 1984-1985. Chelsea’s time in the Second Division played a role in shaping the club’s resilience and determination to return to the First Division. It also provided valuable experience and showcased the fighting spirit that has become synonymous with Chelsea’s identity.
