Known by numerous different sponsored names, the Full Members’ Cup was an English football competition played between 1985 and 1992. It was created in the wake of the Heysel Stadium Disaster of 1985, when English clubs were banned from taking part in European competition. The name is a reference to the fact that it was only open to teams that were Full Members of the English Football League. There were seven finals played between 1986 and 1992, with Chelsea being the joint-most successful club alongside Nottingham Forest.
The London club’s debut season in the Full Members’ Cup was also the first time that they won it, defeating Manchester City 5-4. Chelsea actually led 5-1 at one point thanks to a hat-trick from David Speedie before a late flurry of goals from City saw them get back into the game. Chelsea were once again in the final in 1990, this time going up against Middlesbrough in a game that was significantly more boring than their first appearance. A goal from Anthony Dorigo in the 26th minute was enough to allow the Londoners to see out a 1-0 win.
