Starting with perhaps the Blues’ most recent comeback, we look at when they clashed with Manchester United in the Premier League. Perhaps Chelsea came into this match with much lower expectations, as Manchester United were performing rather poorly at the time.
This was an intense match to watch. The game went back and forth; it was incredibly hard to tell which side was going to take away the victory. When the match was drawing to a close, it seemed all but lost for the Blues. But after giving their all in the final moments of the game, Cole Palmer managed to equalise. The home fans could rest assured that they were taking home at least one point.
But then, out of nowhere, Cole Palmer came back with another goal, the ball ricocheting off a defender and landing neatly in the back of the net, catching everyone off guard and sending the atmosphere in the stadium through the roof.
Versus Napoli, 2012
This match seemed all but lost when it started. Because of how the Champions League works, Chelsea entered this game 3-1 down, as they had suffered a rather tough loss in Napoli’s hometown. This led to a somewhat sombre mood on the day of the match; Chelsea were going to have to climb a mountain if they wanted to come out on top.
And climb a mountain they did. It was looking good for Chelsea, with a 2-nil lead, but after Napoli got one back, the crowd became increasingly nervous. They were two goals away from a win, but time was running out. What could they do to secure themselves a place in the quarter-finals?
Well, luckily for our boys in blue, they received a penalty, which Lampard securely rocketed into the net. This meant the score on the day was 3-1 to Chelsea, but overall they were drawing. Effectively, at this point in the game, it was next goal wins.
Chelsea scored that next goal. It happened in a flash: Drogba crossed it in, and Ivanovic got a nice little touch on it, pushing them through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. But their comebacks in that competition did not end there.
Versus Bayern Munich, Champions League Final 2012
Perhaps Chelsea’s greatest comeback story is the 2012 Champions League final, a match that had every fan on the edge of their seats. Chelsea were playing away, which gave them an inherent disadvantage; everyone knew this, and after their other close calls in the tournament, people were rather anxious to see the outcome. Munich were playing in their hometown, which definitely gave them some confidence.
But the match was somewhat of a stalemate for a long time; even though Bayern Munich had the majority of possession, there was no goal in the first 82 minutes. Then, in the 83rd minute, Bayern Munich scored. Players and fans alike were having flashbacks to all the times they had lost before, surely it was all over.
Only a few minutes later, in the 88th minute, Chelsea were awarded their first corner of the game. Many people were starting to lose all hope, but at least it was something. Drogba managed to connect with the ball and score a header, meaning it was 1-1 coming into the 90th minute. Drogba had another chance to wrap up the game within the 90 minutes in added time but unfortunately missed.
So then it all came down to the penalty shootouts, a high-stress situation where the teams needed to perform at the best of their ability. It was intense; it could have gone either way. Everyone waited with bated breath, not sure what was going to happen. But in the end, Chelsea came out on top, winning their first-ever Champions League trophy.
